Nebraska is not all pancake-flat corn farms and feed lots. It’s also a place where adventure abounds on the northern high plains. Stretching from Valentine to the Wyoming border and south as far as Scottsbluff County is a region often called Wyobraska by its residents. As the name suggests, the region is a melting pot of sorts where east meets west. Eastern farms give way to western ranches and with the transition baseball caps are swapped out for dusty Stetsons, string ties and summer rodeos. Eastern forests transition to the Ponderosa Pine Ridge woodlands of the west.

Whether you are a history buff, naturalist or are into kayaking or fishing on the Niobrara River, there is a lot to see and do here. Here’s my short list for a perfect summer or fall visit to Wyobraska!
- Agate Fossil Beds National Park
- Hudson Meng Mammoth Kill Site
- Kayaking and tubing in the Niobrara River around Valentine, Nebraska
- Fly fishing and spin casting for channel catfish and trout in the region’s many lakes and reservoirs; try Whitney Lake in Dawes county for walleye and channel catfish.
- Day trips to Fort Robinson State Park, Chimney Rock National Historic Site, Toadstool Geological Park and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument
- Wildlife viewing and photography
- Cattle and bison ranch visits
- Summer Rodeos and trail rides around Fort Robinson State Park
- Or, just cooling off under Smith Falls.
